NOTES:
The subject of Stanley hand planes is an extensive and complex story of numerous inventions, enhancements, patents and company buy-outs followed, in recent times, by a decline in interest and a steadily decreasing range from Stanley probably dating from the invention of powered hand planers in the 1950's and 1960's.. There are millions of these planes still in existence. The Stanley No. 1 - the smallest in the bench plane range - is a highly sought-after, rare, and collectible small bench plane, measuring only 5.5 inches (140mm) long with a 1.25-inch (1.02mm) blade. Produced between 1867 and 1943, it is the smallest in the Bailey line, lacks a lateral adjuster, and is often considered a "Holy Grail" for collectors, frequently selling for over UUD$2000
Numerous clones of these planes exist and many variants made by Stanley which, incidentally, also manufactured planes in Australia in years past.
Stanley Bailey Exploded Parts Diagram
- At the peak of their world wide popularity the bench plane range stretched from sizes #1 through to #8 with additional intermediate wider sizes such as #4-1/2 and #5-1/2
- Presumably to protect themselves from copies Stanley used relatevely obscure threads in many parts such as handle and knob mounting screws made from 13/64 inch drill rod and UNC12-20 threads.
- Many components are common across the bench plane range - patterns #3 through #8
- Unfortunately Y levers and lateral adjusters and mounting pins - parts 7 and 9 below - are unavailable separately as spares
- The fork plate and screw on the frog to engage the frog adjustment screw 46 is not available
- At time of these notes - 2024 - complete frog kits are now discontinued (at least in the Australian market)
- The LARGE handle & knob kits in plastic remain available.
- OEM compatible stained beech Handle & Knobs, OEM back irons and blades are available
- When their patents expired there were numerous other makers who cloned much of the range. Most maintained the Stanley threads.
- In recent times Stanley have started to use metric threads on some components. We have generous stocks of these items but do not yet list them
