The action or switching an electrical load causes arcing across the switch terminals more or less due to where the AC sine wave is at the moment of switching and the load being switched. (Note: greatly simplified - a very complex issue).

This arcing charges the terminals which eltrostatically attract wood dust into the case of the switch and over time is a principal cause of inoperable switches.

The possible fix - get an air gun fitted to a compressor and blow out the switch.
