Cold-drawn, blued steel forged nails with large four-faceted head and thick shaft.
Because of their square shafts (larger surface area than conventional round nails) and coarse surfaces, forged nails are more difficult to pull out than the conventional round nails commonly used today. Their shafts are tapered, resulting in an equal distribution of pressure along the length of the nail, which also makes it harder to pull out and reduces the risk of splitting the wood. The nails are primarily used in carpentry, boat building and restoration.
