Description

HOCK - Premium maker of OEM hand plane component spares. This option fits #4-1/2, #5-1/2, #6, #7 Bench Planes & Clones with the following qualification.

Hock blades are a considerable improvement in every respect to the plane makers standard issue whatever the era they were made. In particular they are thicker, flatter and made from improved blade stock  Although usually fitted with an adjustable frog, Stanley and Record planes.were designed for somehwhat thinner blades than available from Hock.  To allow your plane to function with these upgraded blades may require the careful filing out of the plane mouth to allow blade and shaving clearance . Unfortunately as at early 2022 there are few if any thin blade options available anymore so this procedure may be the only way to keep the millions of these planes is use when the blade has reached the end of its life.

Procedure

  1. Remove the blade and chipbreaker assembly
  2. Remove the frog assembly by taking out the frog mounting screws
  3. Using a thick felt tip pen blacken the area of the sole where you intend to file.
  4. Using an awl and square mark up the are to be filed.  It is important to be conservative here.  Bevel down planes require a fine opening for the shaving and you want the plane sole immediately before the blade to support the wood up as close to the cut as feasible.
  5. Using a second cut file open up the mouth as desired and when the desired opening is made polish the newly cut face with fine paper - wet & dry is best
  6. Re-assemble and test
