Power assisted carving is preferred by some carvers as a means to rough pieces to near final dimension. Hand carving can then be employed to complete fine detail and remove the rough, power assisted carved surfaces.

Apart from regular chain saws, the indispensable power tool used for many power carving accessories is an angle grinder. Accessories for an angle grinder include circular chain saw style plates which can have either fixed or free wheeling teeth, abrasive disc burrs in a variety of grits and shapes and flap sander discs again in varying grits. There are also reciprocating carvers which convert the rotary action of an angle grinder to a more conventional action and power chisels in a regular linear action.
